The Georgetown Environment Initiative (GEI) will host a series of gatherings for graduate students engaged in research related to the environment. These GEI graduate Research salons will provide an opportunity for distinguished graduate students to interact informally with peers and faculty for scholarly dialog.
Specific goals of the salons are to encourage interdisciplinary exchange among graduate students and to foster linkages between disciplines that will broaden the intellectual horizons and networks of graduate students at Georgetown. The atmosphere of the salons will be casual and collegial but the meetings will also have meaningful discussion and intellectual substance.
Salon meetings will be held once a month (three or four times per semester) over the course of one academic year. Each meeting will have a shared meal followed by discussion or a presentation. Prof. Matthew Hamilton of Biology will be the organizer and moderator. Other faculty representing diverse disciplines will join the group each month and participate in discussion. Examples of possible activities are discussion of readings that explore themes selected by the group, discussion of a book, short research presentations by graduate students followed by discussion, group discussion of “wicked problems” such as climate change, and group exercises that encourage multidisciplinary thinking. Student participants will receive a stipend of $200.
Nominations Faculty members may nominate up to two graduate students for consideration. Both masters and doctoral students are eligible. All students nominated must have a demonstrated academic interest in an area of the environment, including faculty-mentored scholarship or research, or independent research projects.
Faculty nomination letters should be limited to one page, and must be accompanied by the CV of the graduate student (two page maximum) along with a single page synopsis of the graduate student’s current research. Graduate students will be chosen for participation based on faculty letters, student academic accomplishments, as well as for diversity of fields represented in the salon group.
Nominations should be submitted by e-mail as one single file to Rachel Yancey at firstname.lastname@example.org. The subject line of the e-mail should read GEI GRAD Salon and the <last name> of the nominated student.
All materials should be received by 5 pm EST on FRIDAY, August 22nd, 2014.
Salon meeting dates for Fall semester Wednesday, Sept. 17th; Wednesday, Oct. 15th; Wednesday, Nov. 19th; Wednesday, Dec. 10th. All meeting times are 5-7 PM.
